We celebrate World Environment Day on 5 June every year, to create awareness amongst the people. But is one day mindfulness enough to save the planet from the impending disaster? The answer is no. we humans have utilised the earth and its resources to the maximum, it is exhausted. The environment has been an unfortunate victim of our ruthless actions. And it continues. We have plundered wildlife, sabotaged marine life, cut down trees, polluted natural resources and are almost on the verge of fatiguing the non-renewable resources. So is one day enough to fix all this years of faults?
To answer this question, read the following article. It highlights seven ways in which can contribute to saving the planet.
Lack of usable water seems to be the biggest problem of all. Saving water is thus our foremost responsibility. Close the tap when brushing your teeth or shaving. Recycle water at home and install aeration nozzles on all taps. Do not use water until you absolutely need it.
Save electricity as that will save the use of coal and petroleum (which are non-renewable). Switch off the lights if you are not present in the room. Unplug chargers when not in use. Employ power-saving electronics devices that save energy.
Instead of using petrol and diesel cars, switch to public transportation or maybe just walk (it will keep you healthy as well!).
Don’t buy plastic products until absolutely necessary. Try to use jute bags when buying items from the market or some store. Stop the promotion of plastic bags and products. Opt for reusable containers.
Learn the art of recycling. Reuse paper and save trees (according to research, one ton of paper requires 17 trees to be cut down). Cardboard and paper recycling is currently promoted at large by the governments of several counties and other eco-friendly organisations.
Plant a tree in the backyard of your house or in your neighbourhood. Encourage your neighbours and your kids to take responsibility. One tree can save millions of lives.
When disposing off construction and demolition waste or electronic products, get in touch with professional cleaners who are experts in their job. They use eco-friendly methods to get rid of the waste accumulated. Also, they have access to the right tools for the job. The professionals also charge very nominal amount to provide the facilities, thus making them so popular.
The above mentioned points are very small in magnitude, but a little step is what we need. Earth is our home, so save it from getting ruptured beyond repair. Even taking these baby steps by millions of people individually can create a huge difference. Let us make World Environment Day every day.
